In detail
Central heating covers several distinct jobs. Here is what each one involves and when it is the right answer for a Peterborough property.
A full system installation means sizing the boiler and every radiator to the heat loss of the rooms, running new flow and return pipework, fitting zone valves and controls, and commissioning the whole thing as one system. In an older property that often includes replacing pipework that has been extended and patched over decades.
The commissioning stage decides whether the system performs. Flushing, dosing with inhibitor, fitting a magnetic filter, setting the flow temperature and balancing each radiator are not extras — they are the difference between a system that works and one that merely runs.
Radiators are replaced because they have corroded, because a room has been redecorated, or because the original was never big enough for the space. Sizing matters: a radiator too small for the room will never satisfy the thermostat, and one too large in a small room wastes money.
Relocating a radiator means altering pipework, often through floors, then re-balancing the system afterwards. Towel rails in bathrooms are a common request during a bathroom refit, which we handle as part of the same job because we fit bathrooms too.
Thermostatic radiator valves let you set different temperatures room by room, which is one of the cheapest genuine savings available on an existing system — provided the system is balanced afterwards rather than left with every valve wide open.
Power flushing uses a pumped unit and chemicals to force debris out of radiators and pipework. It is the right answer where the water is black, radiators are cold at the bottom, the pump has failed more than once, or a new boiler is going onto an old system.
It is not a cure-all. Where radiators are internally corroded beyond recovery, flushing will only reveal the pinholes rather than fix them. We tell you honestly which situation you are in before taking money for a flush that will not solve the problem.
Afterwards we fit a magnetic filter if there is not one and dose the system with inhibitor. Without that, the sludge simply comes back and you pay for the same job again in a few years.
Unvented cylinders deliver hot water at mains pressure to several outlets at once, which is why they suit larger houses and homes with more than one bathroom. They are sealed pressure vessels, and installing or servicing one without the G3 qualification is illegal.
The work includes the expansion vessel, the temperature and pressure relief valve, the tundish and the discharge pipework, all sized and routed correctly. Common faults we attend are water discharging from the tundish, hot water running out too quickly, and vessels that have lost their charge.
Programmable room thermostats, correctly configured flow temperatures and zone valves give you control over when and where you spend money on heat. Most homes we visit are running a flow temperature far higher than the system needs, which stops a condensing boiler from condensing at all.
Balancing is the unglamorous part that makes the biggest difference. Setting the lockshield valves so each radiator gets its share of the flow means the far end of the circuit warms up at the same rate as the near end, and the boiler cycles less.
We use copper and appropriate approved fittings, keep isolation accessible, and lag pipework where it runs through unheated spaces. Where floors have to come up, we plan the routes so future access does not mean destroying finishes.
Leaks on heating circuits are usually at radiator valve unions, compression joints, auto air vents or corroded radiators. We find and repair the source rather than dosing sealer into the system, which risks blocking the very heat exchanger you are trying to protect.
