Carbon monoxide risk
Incomplete combustion, a blocked flue or failing seals can release carbon monoxide, which you cannot see or smell. Combustion analysis at service time is how it gets caught.

What it is
A boiler service is a scheduled safety and performance check of your gas appliance and the parts that keep it running. It is not a quick glance and a sticker. A proper service means the case comes off, the combustion is measured with a flue gas analyser, the gas rate and working pressure are checked against the manufacturer's data, the seals, electrodes and heat exchanger are inspected, the condensate route is checked, and the safety devices are tested to confirm they will actually shut the appliance down if something goes wrong.
We charge a flat £80 + VAT for a domestic boiler service in the Peterborough area, and it is carried out by the same Gas Safe registered, City & Guilds / NVQ qualified engineers who install and repair. There is no upsell script. If your boiler is in good order you will be told that; if something is on its way out you will be told that too, along with what it costs to put right and how urgent it is.
Almost every manufacturer makes an annual service a condition of the warranty, and warranties on new boilers run up to 10 years depending on the appliance. Missing one service can quietly cost you the remaining cover — which is why servicing is the cheapest insurance in the house.
Most services take under an hour and are booked around you.
Anyone with a boiler under warranty
Manufacturer cover almost always requires documented annual servicing. Skip one and you can lose years of remaining protection.
Homeowners heading into winter
Autumn is the sensible time. Faults get caught while the house is still warm rather than on the first freezing morning.
Landlords and rental properties
Servicing sits naturally alongside the annual landlord gas safety certificate and cuts down on tenant call-outs.
New homeowners
You have inherited an appliance with no history. One service tells you its condition, its age and whether to budget for a replacement.
Anyone whose bills have crept up
Poor combustion, wrong gas rate and bad controls burn money quietly. A service measures it instead of guessing.
What happens if it waits
A boiler is the only appliance in the house that burns fuel indoors and runs for months at a time. Skipping the annual check does not just risk a breakdown — it risks the warranty, the running cost and, in the worst cases, the people in the house.
Incomplete combustion, a blocked flue or failing seals can release carbon monoxide, which you cannot see or smell. Combustion analysis at service time is how it gets caught.
Most manufacturers require a documented annual service. Miss it and a claim on a boiler with years of cover left can be refused outright.
A weeping seal, a sticking diverter valve or a tired expansion vessel are cheap to sort at service time and expensive when they fail mid-winter.
A boiler running at the wrong gas rate or with a fouled heat exchanger burns more fuel for the same heat, and you pay that difference all year.
Failures never happen at a convenient hour. An out-of-hours repair on a cold weekend costs far more than the service that would have prevented it.
A poorly maintained appliance turns the annual gas safety check into a list of remedials, sometimes with the appliance capped off and a tenant with no heating.
Our process
01
Appliance, flue route, ventilation and clearances checked visually, with dust sheets down and the area protected before the case comes off.
02
Gas rate, working pressure and flue gas analysis measured against the manufacturer's data, and the burner, heat exchanger, electrodes and seals inspected.
03
Components cleaned, seals checked, condensate trap cleared, system pressure corrected and controls checked so the appliance runs as designed.
04
Safety devices, gas tightness and flue integrity tested. If anything is unsafe we tell you immediately and explain your options in plain English.
05
You get a clear verbal handover on the boiler's condition, anything to keep an eye on, and a fixed price for any remedial work — no pressure to book it there and then.
What you get
Documented annual servicing keeps manufacturer cover of up to 10 years intact on newer appliances, which is worth far more than the visit costs.
Flue gas analysis and gas rate testing by a Gas Safe registered engineer (540834), with £5m public liability and £10m employers' liability behind the work.
The faults that cause January call-outs are usually visible in October. Catching them at service time is the cheapest fix available.
You get told straight whether the boiler has years left or whether it is time to start budgeting for a replacement. No scare tactics, no invented faults.
£80 + VAT for a domestic boiler service. Any remedial work is quoted separately and agreed before we touch it.
In and out in under an hour on most appliances, with the area left exactly as we found it — the thing our Checkatrade reviews mention most.
In detail
The checks that matter vary with the appliance and the system around it. This is how the work differs across the boilers we see most in Peterborough homes.
On a combi, the extra attention goes to the plate heat exchanger, the diverter valve and the expansion vessel — the three parts that generate the majority of combi faults. Weak hot water, hot water that runs lukewarm after a minute, or heating that comes on when you run a tap all point at the diverter.
We also check the pressure behaviour over the visit. A combi that needs topping up every few weeks has a leak or a failed expansion vessel, and finding that at service time is far cheaper than finding it when the ceiling stains.
With a system boiler, the cylinder is part of the picture. Unvented cylinders are pressure vessels: the expansion vessel charge, the temperature and pressure relief valve, the tundish and the discharge pipework all need checking, and it is illegal to work on them without the G3 qualification. We hold it.
Signs that a cylinder needs attention include water discharging from the tundish, hot water that runs out faster than it used to, and noise from the vessel when outlets are opened. None of these fix themselves.
On an open-vented system there is more to look at away from the boiler: the feed and expansion tank in the loft, the ball valve, the vent pipe and the condition of the system water. Sludge and corrosion in an older system show up here first.
Where the water is black and the radiators are cold at the bottom, we will talk to you about a power flush and inhibitor rather than pretending a clean burner solves it. Protecting the system is what keeps the next boiler alive.
A service is also the sensible moment to check that the controls are actually doing something useful. Thermostats set too high, a flow temperature nobody has ever adjusted and unbalanced radiators waste more gas in a year than most people expect.
If radiators are cold at the top they need bleeding; cold at the bottom means sludge. If some rooms never warm up, the system needs balancing. We will point out what we find and price the fix separately if you want it done.
A landlord gas safety certificate (CP12) is a legally required safety check of the gas appliances in a rental property, priced at £60 + VAT. A service is a maintenance visit that cleans and tunes the appliance. They are not the same thing, and a certificate alone does not satisfy a manufacturer's warranty terms.
Most landlords we work with book both together on the same visit so the property is compliant and the appliance is maintained in one appointment, with one set of paperwork and one tenant access arrangement.
We service gas boilers across Peterborough, Yaxley, Hampton, Whittlesey, Huntingdon, Sawtry, Stilton, Stamford, Market Deeping, Ramsey, Oundle and the surrounding Cambridgeshire towns.

Common questions
Gas rate and working pressure, flue gas analysis, burner and heat exchanger condition, seals and electrodes, condensate trap, ventilation and flue integrity, system pressure and the operation of the safety devices.
You get told what it is, how urgent it is and what it costs to fix, before anything is done. If the appliance is immediately dangerous we will explain why and what has to happen next.
Late summer and autumn. The diary is less pressured, and any fault we find can be sorted before the heating is running every day.
