Repeated resetting hides a real fault
A boiler that locks out and clears on a reset is telling you something is wrong. Resetting it daily wears the parts that are already struggling and can mask a combustion problem.

What it is
Boiler repair is diagnostic work before it is anything else. Two boilers showing the same fault code can need completely different repairs, so we start by establishing what has actually failed — gas pressure and gas rate, system pressure, flow and return temperatures, the behaviour of the pump, diverter and expansion vessel, and the combustion readings on the flue gas analyser. Only once we know the cause do we talk about parts and cost.
The work is carried out by the same Gas Safe registered (540834), City & Guilds / NVQ qualified team that installs and services. That matters on a repair: an engineer who fits boilers all week recognises a failing part from the way the appliance behaves, rather than replacing components one at a time and charging for each attempt.
Repairs and call-outs can be charged at an hourly rate rather than a fixed price, because nobody honest can quote a repair blind. What you always get before we start is a clear explanation of the fault, what it will take to fix, and what that is likely to cost — agreed with you first. If the sensible answer is that the boiler is past economic repair, we will say so and price a replacement instead of taking money for a repair that buys you three months.
We cover emergency call-outs 24/7 across Peterborough and the surrounding Cambridgeshire towns. If the house is cold or there is a gas smell, phone rather than fill in a form — 07921 123669.
No heating or no hot water
The boiler has locked out, will not fire, or fires and cuts straight back out again.
An error code on the display
F- or E- codes covering ignition failure, overheat, fan, pressure and flow sensor faults. The code narrows it down; testing confirms it.
Pressure that keeps dropping
Topping up every few weeks means a leak somewhere in the system or a failed expansion vessel — not a boiler that just needs water.
Leaks and water where it should not be
Dripping from the boiler case, a wet cupboard floor or staining on the ceiling below. Water and electrics do not mix; this needs looking at now.
Noise, kettling and cold radiators
Banging, gurgling or whistling usually means sludge, air or a circulation problem rather than a dying appliance.
What happens if it waits
Boilers rarely fail without warning — they give you noise, dropping pressure, intermittent hot water or a lockout that clears when you reset it. Every one of those is the cheap moment to act. Ignore them and the same fault comes back bigger.
A boiler that locks out and clears on a reset is telling you something is wrong. Resetting it daily wears the parts that are already struggling and can mask a combustion problem.
A slow leak in the system rots floorboards, stains ceilings and corrodes fittings long before it becomes obvious. The building damage usually costs more than the repair.
Untreated system water wrecks pumps, blocks heat exchangers and cold-spots radiators. Left alone it will shorten the life of the next boiler too.
Combustion faults, blocked flues and failing seals can produce carbon monoxide, which has no smell or colour. This is why gas work is restricted to Gas Safe registered engineers.
A fault chased down in October is a normal visit. The same fault on a freezing Sunday is an emergency call-out with a household stuck in the cold.
Repairs by unregistered fitters can void manufacturer cover and leave you with no valid record of the work at all.
Our process
01
We take the symptoms over the phone first, then check the appliance, the system pressure, the controls and the flue on arrival with the area protected.
02
Gas rate, working pressure, flue gas analysis and component testing to find the actual cause rather than guessing from the fault code alone.
03
We explain what has failed, what it takes to fix and what it will cost. Nothing is replaced until you have said yes.
04
Parts fitted, the cause addressed — including system water, pressure or leak issues rather than just the symptom on the display.
05
Appliance re-tested under load, combustion re-checked, controls confirmed working, area cleared and the workmanship covered by our 1-year guarantee.
What you get
Proper diagnosis with test equipment, not part-swapping on a hunch. It is faster, and it costs you less than paying for two attempts.
Repairs can be charged hourly, and whichever basis applies is explained and agreed with you before we start work.
Cold house, no hot water, a leak that cannot wait — we take emergency call-outs around the clock across the Peterborough area.
If a boiler is beyond economic repair you get told, with a replacement priced from £1,600 + VAT so you can compare the two properly.
Gas Safe registered 540834, G3 qualified for unvented cylinders, £5m public liability and £10m employers' liability.
Every repair carries our 1-year workmanship guarantee, and any parts we supply carry their own manufacturer cover.
In detail
These are the failures we are called out to most often in Peterborough homes, what causes them, and what a real repair involves rather than a temporary patch.
A boiler that clicks and fails to light is usually an ignition electrode, a gas valve issue, a flame sensing fault or a gas supply problem. The correct approach is to measure the gas working pressure and gas rate first, because a boiler starved of gas will present exactly like a component failure and no amount of new parts will fix it.
Repeated lockouts also point at flue and condensate problems. A blocked or frozen condensate pipe in winter will lock a boiler out reliably every cold morning until the pipework is thawed, re-routed or lagged properly.
Pressure that falls over days or weeks is either a leak in the system or a failed expansion vessel. We test the vessel charge before assuming there is a leak, because replacing pipework on a system whose vessel has simply lost its pre-charge is money wasted.
Where there is a genuine leak, it is normally at a radiator valve, a compression joint, an auto air vent or inside the boiler itself. We find and fix the source. Chemical leak sealer is not a repair; it can block the heat exchanger and turn a fitting-sized problem into a boiler-sized one.
Lukewarm water, water that goes cold after a minute, or heating that comes on whenever a tap is opened all point at the diverter valve or the plate heat exchanger. Scale build-up in hard water areas is a common cause of a blocked plate exchanger.
The fix depends on which it is: a diverter cartridge or valve replacement, a plate exchanger clean or replacement, and in scaled systems a conversation about scale protection so it does not happen again in two years.
Kettling — that boiling-kettle rumble — is scale or sludge on the heat exchanger causing localised overheating. Gurgling is air. Cold at the top of a radiator is air; cold at the bottom is sludge and corrosion sitting in the system.
The proper repair is to treat the system water: cleanse or power flush, fit a magnetic filter if there is not one, and dose with inhibitor. Doing that protects the pump, the valves and the heat exchanger, and it is what keeps the next boiler from suffering the same fate.
Circulation pumps, three-port and two-port motorised valves, thermistors, pressure sensors and PCBs all fail with age, and each produces its own pattern of symptoms — one zone not heating, hot water only, heating only, or the boiler firing and cutting out.
Sometimes the fault is not in the boiler at all: a dead programmer, a room thermostat with flat batteries or a wiring centre fault will stop a perfectly healthy appliance. We check the controls before condemning parts.
There is a point where repair money is better put towards a replacement: obsolete parts, repeated failures in one heating season, a corroded heat exchanger, or a repair cost approaching a significant share of a new installation from £1,600 + VAT.
We will tell you when you are at that point, and we will put both numbers in front of you. A new appliance comes with manufacturer warranty of up to 10 years depending on the boiler installed, which is part of the comparison too.
