What a boiler installation actually involves
A boiler installation is the removal of your existing gas appliance and the fitting, commissioning and certification of a new one — plus everything that has to happen around it for the new boiler to run safely and efficiently. That means checking the gas supply can carry the demand, sizing the boiler to the property rather than to a brochure, dealing with the condensate run, fitting the flue to the manufacturer's clearances, adding a filter and system protection, and registering the appliance so your warranty and Building Regulations paperwork are in place.
We fit gas boilers only. Combis, system boilers and regular (heat-only) boilers are all everyday work for us, and where the property has an unvented hot water cylinder we hold the G3 qualification legally required to work on it. Every engineer on the team is City & Guilds / NVQ qualified and the business is Gas Safe registered under 540834.
Most installations in Peterborough homes are a straight swap done in a day, with larger jobs — moving the boiler to a different room, converting from a regular boiler and tanks to a combi, or fitting a new cylinder — running to two or three days. Mistakes we get called out to fix
- Buying a boiler online and looking for someone to fit it, then finding the model is wrong for the property's gas supply or flow rate.
- Choosing on kW output alone. An oversized boiler cycles on and off, wears faster and costs more to run than a correctly sized one.
- Skipping the system filter and chemical flush on an old system, then blaming the new boiler when it blocks up.
- Accepting a verbal 'rough price' with no written scope, then being charged extras for the flue, the condensate or the gas run.
- Letting a non-Gas-Safe fitter do the gas connection because they are cheaper. Always ask for the registration number and check it.
- Converting to a combi in a house with poor incoming mains flow, then living with a weak shower for the next fifteen years.

Boiler types, materials and the situations they suit
Boiler installation is not one job — it is a family of jobs with very different costs and outcomes. This is what we actually fit around Peterborough, and how we decide which is right for a property.
Combi boilers
A combi heats hot water on demand from the mains, so there is no cylinder and no loft tanks. In a one or two bathroom house with decent incoming mains pressure and flow, it is usually the simplest and cheapest option to install and the one that frees up the most space.
The limit is flow rate. A combi can only deliver what the incoming main gives it, and it can only supply one outlet properly at a time. Before we recommend one, we check the mains flow at the property rather than assuming. If a family of five is fighting over two showers every morning, a combi is the wrong answer and we will say so.
System boilers with an unvented cylinder
A system boiler works with a sealed, pressurised hot water cylinder. It gives mains-pressure hot water to several outlets at once, which is why it suits larger houses, en suites and anywhere two showers might run together.
Unvented cylinders are pressure vessels and it is illegal to install or service one without the G3 qualification. We hold it. That covers the expansion vessel, the temperature and pressure relief arrangement, the tundish and the discharge pipework, all of which have to be right for the installation to be safe and compliant.
Regular (heat-only) boilers
Regular boilers keep the traditional open-vented setup with a feed and expansion tank in the loft and a vented cylinder in the airing cupboard. They remain the sensible choice where the existing pipework is sound, the radiators are older, and a full system conversion would cost far more than the benefit is worth.
Swapping like for like is often the fastest, cheapest and least disruptive installation available. We quote it honestly against the alternatives instead of pushing everyone towards the most expensive option.
Conversions and boiler relocations
Converting from a regular system to a combi means removing the cylinder and tanks, capping and altering pipework, making good in the airing cupboard and loft, and rerunning the mains cold feed. It is a bigger job than a swap and we price it as one, with the extra work listed rather than buried.
Moving a boiler — kitchen cupboard to utility, or upstairs to downstairs — brings new gas runs, a new flue route with correct clearances from windows, doors and boundaries, and a fresh condensate route to a suitable drain. Every one of those has to be surveyed rather than guessed at.
Materials, controls and system protection
We fit copper and appropriate approved fittings for gas and heating pipework, a magnetic system filter on every installation, and chemical inhibitor after a cleanse so the new heat exchanger is not fed with the sludge that killed the last one. Skipping either is the fastest way to invalidate a warranty.
Controls matter as much as the appliance. A programmable room thermostat, correctly set flow temperature and properly balanced radiators can change what you spend on gas far more than the badge on the front of the boiler. We set them up and show you how to use them before we leave.
Condensate pipework run externally is lagged and sized to reduce the risk of freezing in a Cambridgeshire winter — a frozen condensate is one of the most common and most avoidable January call-outs there is.
Rentals and landlord properties
For landlords the calculation is different: reliability and paperwork beat features. A well-chosen, well-warrantied appliance in a rental means fewer tenant call-outs, and it makes the annual landlord gas safety certificate a formality rather than a source of remedial work.
